Santa Rosa de Lima and Telenovelas

Buenos noches from Lima. Today is the festival of Santa Rosa de Lima, the patron saint of Lima and all of Peru. The city is going a little crazy with fireworks, road closures and parades. The church of Santa Rosa itself looks beautiful, covered in flowers and pink lights. Rosa was apparently into self-mortification so might not approve of the festivities in her honour!

My hotel is very close to the Plaza de Armas where many of the festivities are taking place, so rather than try to sleep through the noise (as we have a 5.30am departure for the Amazon tomorrow), I’m watching the telenovela channel – Laberintas de Pasíon is on.

There’s lots of big hair and big eyebrows, kind of like Bold and the Beautiful in the 90’s. I can barely understand a word but I can’t stop watching.

Lima has been a good couple of days, but am ready to move on tomorrow. I took the photo below in the city yesterday. It seems to have absolutely zero effect on drivers!
